Joyce’s work

It’s appropriate that this work of Joyce’s is in the Worcester City art collection as it depicts one of her favourite subjects – the hop fields that were once ubiquitous in the fields around her home town of Malvern. From the Museums Worcestershire website: “Hopfields Under Snow came into the collection in the 1960s, and has been a very popular picture with our visitors. The scene is set on a wintry day in West Worcestershire – snow covers the dormant hop stocks, which are waiting for the warmer days of spring before bursting into life. It will be over six months before the hops are ready for picking, drying and sending off to the brewery. Sadly over the years these traditional hop-yards are slowly disappearing from the Worcestershire landscape, with some being replaced by the new dwarf varieties.”

‘Circles’ – the only known fully abstract work of Joyce’s
This untitled painting is quite unlike any of Joyce’s work that her estate is aware of, and we’re very grateful to Rob Derrick for sharing it with us. Apparently painted in 1977, based on Joyce’s signature on it, the piece reflects her keen interest in the natural world. We’re looking into the significance of the musical notation and will update this site if and when we find out more.
